When a person makes the choice of faith to repent of their sin and to invite the Lord Jesus into their life – they are given the gift of the redemptive power provided by the Lord Jesus in His Crucifixion, Resurrection, Ascension and the Day of Pentecost.
The presence of the Lord Jesus in one’s life changes one’s character and habit patterns. The power of sin is broken and they have new desires in the most fundamental areas of life.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! 2 Corinthians 5:17
The chance of character is evidence that a person is truly born again and not simply an intellectual religious individual.
